FTSE Reporting Research

This year marks Black Sun’s 15th annual analysis of FTSE 100 corporate reporting, examining how companies are responding to a changing environment and regulatory landscape.

Over that time reporting has changed profoundly – from a compliance driven tick box record of past performance exercise to one of challenging mindsets and behaviours internally, setting out effectiveness of decision making and demonstrating sustainable benefits for shareholders, employees and wider stakeholders.

Rewiring the Ecosystem for Resilience

Now more than ever businesses need the trust of their stakeholders and society at large to prosper over the long-term. To truly drive the change that will be required for the future, companies need to fundamentally rewire their thinking and their ecosystem for resilience. We believe that our Six principles of Trust will be more important than ever in a post-Covid world. Individually and collectively these principles contribute to corporate trust and will be critical in forging strong relationships with key stakeholders, demonstrating positive impact on the economy and wider society.

While the principles serve as content themes, the Building Blocks are they key content components of a typical annual report. This year our research report includes the analysis of the Six Principles of Trust and the Building Blocks of reporting, as well as a number of 2020 Vision Special Features. Each of these topics is further explored as a sub-report available individually:

The Six Principles of Trust

This sub-report sets out our six principles of trust: Purpose, Culture, Stakeholders Engagement, Cognitive Diversity, Responsible Business, and Transformation and Long-term Thinking. Each of them provides a framework for discussions on reporting trends.

Our Insights team presented key statistics and trends around the six themes on our webinar launch of the research, “Exploring the Principles of Trust".

The Building Blocks

This sub-report is dedicated to the typical building blocks of an annual report: Setting the Scene, Leadership Statements, Business Model, Market Review, Strategy, Performance, Risk, Governance and Remuneration. A helpful resource to preparers of reports, the report looks at reporting trends as well as ‘best and next practice’ by each content element.

Our Insights team discussed emerging trends that are likely to dominate the upcoming reporting season in the second webinar, “Exploring the Building Blocks of Reporting”.

Embracing new ways to communicate and engage with you

To launch the research we introduced our #rewiringforresilience webinar and podcast series. Through a series of webinars we revealed key trends emerging in corporate reporting and how they are driving fundamental business change, as well as having had open and honest conversations with investors, corporates and industry experts about the future of communications in an era of wider stakeholder engagement and changing relationships. And most importantly we have explored views on the importance of building trust, expectations for the future and gathering practical advice for corporates and Boards wanting to communicate more effectively with their stakeholders.
