South32

Driving continuous improvement and governance

Black Sun has supported South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, in their materiality assessment for three consecutive years. South32 uses the materiality assessment to ensure they focus on the most material issues and address issues through continuous improvement and governance actions over time.

Insights from the assessments also inform their communications strategy and shapes the narrative for their reporting suite.

The process

The process included:

• A desk research stage identifying sector specific and universal issues as well as relevant South32 specific issues.

• Media listening to identify the issues most talked about in the news and through social media platforms. This gave insight into what the wider stakeholder communities were talking about.

• Stakeholder interviews to validate the findings of the desk research. Interviews were held with a range of stakeholders including C-suite, board members and leadership teams as well as key suppliers, customers and investors.

• A final scoring phase which reflected on the findings from the entire process and documented recommendations with final adjustments to the hierarchy of material issues
