Reach, one of Britain’s biggest newspaper groups, needed a materiality assessment to form the foundation for the development of their responsible business framework and ensure consensus around what matters most.

The process
The process included:
• A desk research stage identifying issues based on key Internal sources, regulatory requirements, peer disclosures as well as Industry and Universal factors.
• Media scanning
• A survey covering Board and C-suite, suppliers and investors.
• Independent inductive interviews with a range of internal and external stakeholders including Board members and investors.
• A final scoring phase which included a number of group feedback sessions, including with the Board, culminating in final adjustments to the hierarchy of material issues.
• The development of a reporting framework, grouping material issues under four pillars to form the basis for monitoring, management and sustainability communication going forward.
