Started in 2017 by Compass Group USA, Stop Food Waste Day is now recognised globally in every corner of the world. Over the years, it has successfully raised awareness of the issue, educating through engaging with society at all levels and sharing practical, creative, and impactful ways people can change their behaviour to reduce food waste.
As a result, millions have taken the pledge to end food waste, shared tips on how they reduce waste at home and been involved in the global conversation around how we can all do more to reduce our impact.
Our digital and development teams took on the project with a clear objective: to enhance the experience of people visiting the campaign website, optimise it for search engines, and ensure accessibility to all. We introduced a refined navigation layout, a tagging system for recipes, and updated creative assets to make it easier for visitors to engage with the content, learn about the campaign, and find ways to contribute to reducing food waste.
The refreshed website also features a recipes and tips section, which focuses on minimising food waste through creative meal preparation - offering videos, a free cookbook, and insights from world-renowned chefs. Its aim is to transform how we view and use commonly wasted ingredients, such as stale bread and bruised fruits, encouraging a second life for these products.
This project follows a long-standing relationship between Black Sun and Compass Group (see case study here). [TJ1] Over the years, we’ve helped the food services global leader refine its stakeholder communications strategy through its corporate reports, intranet, and website. We initially supported their stop food waste day initiative through the development of the campaign microsite, and it’s been a pleasure to see how the relationship has continued to evolve in line with our ongoing commitment to spark positive change.
The statistics on food waste are staggering: 33% of all food produced is wasted yearly, which is equivalent to $1.2 trillion (approx. £944 billion) worth of food. This waste contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions, making it a pressing environmental, social and economic issue. By saving just 25% of the food currently lost or wasted, we could feed 870 million hungry people.*
If you’d like to get involved in this fantastic and vital cause, you can show your support by:
· Taking the Stop Food Waste Day pledge and sharing it on social media using the hashtag #StopFoodWasteDay.
· Using the social media cards, digital/print posters from the ‘Download Toolkit’ page on the Stop Food Waste Day website to spread the word and encourage others to join the movement.
· Engaging with and following the campaign on social media to stay updated and extend its reach.
It’s a great opportunity to contribute to global change, inspiring actions that reduce food waste and create a more sustainable future.
